2016 Winners!

The York Inn is a small traditional pub in a small traditional rural village set on top of the Blackdown Hills in Somerset where 6 roads converge on each other. The York Inn is over 400 years old and is full of character and charm. Having lived in various village communities all our lives we know and understand what is important to our locals. Both Paul and I believe in working our opening times ourselves showing our customers our dedication to succeed along with a handful of locally employed staff whose knowledge is also invaluable.

Each Christmas eve we arrange for Father Christmas to arrive at the pub on his illuminated tractor and trailer from where he then moves into the dining room which has been turned into his grotto. Along with his two elves he then gives out presents to all the children in the village (and others!) which we have supplied. Two local ladies come in and give out carol sheets and play the violin and guitar which everyone joins in with. A magical start to Christmas.

We offer our premises for organisations to hold meetings at no cost and provide free food.

All rugby and football matches have a free half time buffet for the locals and any donations go to the chosen charity on the bar.

We have so far raised funds for the village community shop. This is a community run shop with one paid member of staff and over seventy volunteers on the list willing to help in two hour slots.

We have also helped the Humming Bird Care Home for the purchase of the AED, which is available now 24 hours a day to the community.

We sponsor both the football and cricket clubs with free food and shirt sponsorship.

On Sept 29th members from the village are cycling from London to Brighton to raise money for cancer respite care. The pub alone has raised over £3k with a month to go.

The community bus needed a new direction and we took on the mantle of keeping this going.

Exeter Leukaemia fund, who treated me during my Chemo, have been donated over £2k from events in the pub

Any money won would be invested in the local community mini bus. Our community, like so many other rural areas, no longer has a bus route and a mini bus was set up to run local groups on shopping and day trips. The bus is available to anyone in the community to hire at a cost of £35 per half a day including the driver plus fuel. The current bus has come to the end of its economic life and needs replacing. We have raised £11,000 towards this but are still some way off our target. This is a valuable resource used by the Women's institute, gardening club, football and cricket clubs, Humming bird care home as well as any others that wish to arrange a day out. The drivers are all volunteers and give up their time for the benefit of others.
